A scarce regular line regiment example of scarlet melton cloth with buff/white facings to the cuffs and collar, the latter, mounted with four padded bullion panels each mounted with a regimental gilt metal button of a crowned garter with regimental title of South Devon within, the garter and the numerals 48 to the centre, all encompassed within a palm and oakleaf wreath.
The collar also with four padded bullion lines with a single regimental button attached to each. The tails are with white turn backs and tail ornaments of a gold bullion regimental insignia. Interior with quilted cotton lining.
Condition: The scarlet has slighted faded, now with some age wear and staining, minor moth damage, missing two large buttons from the front, all small buttons are present, age wear to the collar, minor repairs the coatee looks like it has seen campaign service, the tail insignia in excellent condition. The bullion pocket flaps look like they have been removed by a tailor rather than pay for a new coatee when the pattern changed in1846, I would hope any coatee experts could forward advise if I am correct in my assumption.
